Free Web Resources and Practical Local AI Guides
Best Free Web Resources (BFWR) is an independent site founded by Rupesh Kumar in 2010. We publish free resources for designers and developers, plus practical guides and calculators for running open AI models on your own computer.
What We Do
BFWR started as a curated catalogue of free design and development resources: fonts, templates, icons, WordPress tools and coding tutorials. Today we also cover local AI, which means running open-weight large language models (LLMs) on your own PC or Mac instead of relying only on cloud services. Running models locally can keep your data private, work offline and avoid per-token API costs, but it depends heavily on your hardware. Our job is to help you understand what will realistically run on your machine before you spend money or download a 40GB model.
How We Research: Our Methodology
We want to be clear about where our numbers come from. We don’t operate a hardware test lab, and we don’t present our figures as first-hand benchmarks. Our guides and tools are built from:
- Official specifications: memory capacity and bandwidth, GPU VRAM and chip details from manufacturers (Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, Intel) and model cards from model publishers.
- Transparent math: our VRAM calculator estimates memory as model weights (parameters ร bits per weight) plus the KV cache (which grows with context length) plus runtime overhead. Token-speed estimates are derived mainly from memory bandwidth, because generating text on consumer hardware is usually limited by how fast the weights can be read from memory.
- Public benchmarks: where we reference real-world speeds, we rely on published results from inference projects (such as llama.cpp), hardware reviewers and the local AI community. We link to sources wherever possible.
Real performance varies with software versions, drivers, quantization format, context length, thermals and settings. Treat our speed figures as estimates and ranges, not guarantees.
Editorial Standards
- Accuracy first: we check prices, specs and release details against official sources and correct errors when we find them.
- Clear labelling: estimates are labelled as estimates. We don’t claim hands-on testing we haven’t done.
- Updates: local AI moves fast. We revisit guides when important new models, runtimes or hardware arrive, and note when a guide was updated.
- Free tools: our interactive AI tools are free to use.
