Mobile App Design Best Practices & Beyond: A Guide to Follow

July 21, 2018 by Rupesh Kumar

There is no denial of the fact that mobile apps could do wonders for a business. They are in the mainstream for quite some time now and are actually performing well not only for businesses but also for app entrepreneurs.

That basically concludes that apps are really important. And, being an entrepreneur you cannot ignore the importance of applications. However, there is a fact that states, 75% of users open an app and never come back. Reason being, mobile users expect a lot from an app. In case, they are not satisfied with its performance, they find it better not to return to the app.

So, what are the elements that impart the “Good experience” to the users? Let’s explore the fundamentals of mobile app designing together.

Never Clutter The Experience For The Users

An exceptional UI design is all about delivering the right information leaving behind all the unnecessary information. The interface( irrespective of the platform it is designed for) must remain uncluttered. By stuffing too much of information in the app interface, you confuse your users, which may become a reason for them to abandon the application. An overloaded interface is too much for the users. And, that means you need to arrange the icon to offer a seamless experience to the users. Recent smartphones are the best examples of uncluttered spaces that are designed to offer an exceptional experience to the users. Thus, show only what’s important and just leave behind all the clutter.

Tap targets Must Remain Design Friendly

Actionable elements in mobile apps are important so that users can easily interact with the app. It implies that targets (call to actions) must remain recognizable enough for users to tap on the right target. The best design practices for call to action is the touch area of 7-10 mm so that users can accurately tap on these icons. These tap targets are easy to recognize and to touch while making the interaction with a button.  It is also important to keep into the mind that tap targets are not located too close to each other. A proper amount of spacing is very much important while designing these CTAs.

Design for Interruption

We live in a world that is continually interrupting our attention span with a number of elements. Additionally, it is important to design interfaces for mobile minds. In addition to it, making it easier for the users to re-arrange the elements of an app when users return to it after the interruption will add value to the application. Twitter provides a fine example to the same. The app’s notification screen displays the recent notifications on the top. Till the time users stay on the app, the app interface doesn’t update automatically. It simply displays the number of notifications at the top of the list.

Include Intuitive Gestures

Use gestures in your mobile application that are important for your app category. Gestures are hidden controls, which makes it important to include. The gesture-driven interface makes it easy for the users to follow the directions in order to reach the final destination. However, while using these gestures, it is important to use only those that goes exceptionally well with the app icon. The pull to refresh icon is one gesture that a number of applications use in their interfaces that equally attracts the users.

Good Onboarding is A Must

Remember the rule of the thumb, creative onboarding is a must that could offer exceptional offerings to the users. The onboarding should be genuine as well as beneficial for the users who will use your application. Thus, an attractive onboarding is a must when hunting for a creative design. Make the elements appear clear for the users as they will only onboard if they find an app either creative or useful to use further. Additionally, keep in mind to grab the designs that are in use.

The Upshot

Onboarding an app is always a new experience for the users and they will only go for the same in case there is something useful for them. And, when it is about designing an application the creativity matters the most. Be it navigational transition or the idea of making the swipe a seamless one, creativity is the most important ingredient of all. Delightful animation equally matters when designing app for the users. Do include the elements that are innovative, exceptional, and interactive. And most importantly, make sure your app is accessible by all your users. Allow users to download your app from different operating systems and increasingly popular VPN proxy servers.
